According to Sony, the Playstation 4 has sold 5 million units worldwide.
Sony had previously stated that they hoped to sell more than 5 million units before the end of March. Instead, now the target has already been reached before the console has even released in Japan, where release is scheduled for February 22nd.
In direct comparison with Sony’s main competitor, Microsoft announced last month that they had sold 3 million units of their Xbox One in 2013. Sony claimed to have sold 4.2 million in the same period.
In a public statement, SCE president Andrew House said that he was “thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season.”
For Sony, this news is a small ray of light in otherwise dark times for the Japanese company, which recently announced an expected loss of $1 billion dollars at the end of this fiscal year.
