Today, the online retailer, Amazon has announced the acquisition of Double Helix, the studio behind last year’s critically acclaimed reboot of Killer Instinct for the Xbox One.
According to a report by TechCrunch, the news came out after an invitation for a joint recruiting event held by Double Helix and Amazon was leaked. The event was to take place february 13th where it was also expected for the acquisition to become public.
Amazon later confirmed this rumour, stating that “Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers.”
Recently it has also been rumoured that Amazon are looking to develop an android console of their own for release this year. This rumour of a console is said to be a direct competitor to the likes of both Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo’s consoles.
Double Helix was founded in 2007 through the merger of the two studios, The Collective and Shiny Entertainment. The studio has recently finished its development of the platformer, Strider which is set to be released february 18th for both last- and next-gen consoles.
